First Grade Expectations

Welcome to First Grade! This is a year of exciting growth and learning. In first grade, students build on the skills they developed in kindergarten and continue to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Here are some key expectations for our first grade students:

  1. Academic Skills:

    • Reading: Students will continue to improve their reading skills by learning to read fluently, recognizing sight words, and understanding basic story elements (characters, setting, plot). They will read simple books and begin to comprehend what they read.
    • Writing: Students will practice writing complete sentences, using correct punctuation and capitalization. They will begin writing short stories, letters, and simple reports, and work on spelling and grammar.
    • Math: Students will develop a deeper understanding of numbers, addition, subtraction, and basic problem-solving. They will also work with time, money, measurement, and simple shapes.
    • Science & Social Studies: We explore topics such as the environment, seasons, family, community, and basic scientific concepts like plants, animals, and the human body.
  2. Social-Emotional Development:

    • Students will continue to work on building positive relationships with peers, learning to share, cooperate, and respect others’ feelings.
    • They will develop stronger problem-solving skills and understand how to manage emotions in different situations.
  3. Behavior Expectations:

    • Show respect for others and classroom materials.
    • Follow directions and classroom rules to help create a positive learning environment.
    • Practice being responsible for personal belongings and completing tasks.
  4. Independence:

    • Students will work on being more independent in completing assignments, organizing their work, and asking for help when needed.
    • They will begin to manage time and transitions between activities more efficiently.
  5. Communication:

    • Students will practice speaking clearly and listening attentively to others.
    • They will work on asking and answering questions, as well as expressing their thoughts and ideas in group discussions.

First grade is a year of significant growth and development, and we work together with parents to support each child’s success. We are excited to see their progress as they build a strong foundation for the years ahead!
