Second Grade Expectations

Welcome to Second Grade! This year, students will continue to grow as independent learners, developing both academically and socially. Our second-grade curriculum is designed to foster a love for learning while building strong foundational skills for future success. Here are the key expectations for our second-grade students:

  1. Academic Skills:

    • Reading: Students will work on reading fluency, comprehension, and understanding different genres of literature. They will read more challenging books, identify story elements, and begin to make inferences and predictions.
    • Writing: Students will write clear, organized stories, reports, and simple essays, using proper punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They will also work on spelling, handwriting, and sentence structure.
    • Math: Students will expand their understanding of addition and subtraction, learning more complex strategies, working with word problems, and mastering basic multiplication and division concepts. They will also explore measurement, money, time, and shapes.
    • Science & Social Studies: We will explore topics such as habitats, weather, the solar system, communities, and historical figures, encouraging curiosity and critical thinking.
  2. Social-Emotional Growth:

    • Students will focus on building strong friendships, learning to resolve conflicts peacefully, and understanding how to work cooperatively with others.
    • They will develop stronger self-control, taking responsibility for their actions, and working on managing emotions in different situations.
  3. Behavior Expectations:

    • Show respect for others and classroom materials.
    • Follow classroom routines and rules to help create a positive, productive learning environment.
    • Be responsible for completing assignments, staying organized, and asking for help when needed.
  4. Independence:

    • Students will continue to develop independence in their work and daily routines, including managing time, organizing materials, and completing tasks.
    • They will learn to set and work toward personal goals and monitor their own progress.
  5. Communication Skills:

    • Students will practice speaking clearly and listening attentively to others in discussions and group activities.
    • They will also work on writing responses and explaining ideas and concepts in their own words.

Second grade is a year of growth and exploration, and we are excited to work with parents to ensure every child succeeds. We look forward to seeing their continued progress and building a strong foundation for the future!
