Third Grade Expectations

Welcome to Third Grade! This year, students will build upon the skills they've learned in previous grades and continue to develop as independent learners. Third grade is an exciting year full of new challenges and opportunities for growth. Here are the key expectations for our third-grade students:

  1. Academic Skills:

    • Reading: Students will focus on improving reading fluency, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. They will explore more complex texts, identifying themes, main ideas, supporting details, and making inferences.
    • Writing: Students will develop stronger writing skills, focusing on writing structured paragraphs, stories, and reports. They will work on improving their spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence variety, and will practice editing their work.
    • Math: Students will deepen their understanding of multiplication and division, working with larger numbers and more complex word problems. They will also explore fractions, measurement, time, and geometry concepts.
    • Science & Social Studies: Students will learn about Earth’s resources, ecosystems, basic physical science concepts, and important historical events and figures. They will engage in hands-on activities and projects that encourage exploration and critical thinking.
  2. Social-Emotional Growth:

    • Students will work on developing self-confidence, taking responsibility for their actions, and being proactive in problem-solving.
    • They will learn to cooperate and collaborate with peers, respect differences, and practice conflict resolution skills.
  3. Behavior Expectations:

    • Show respect for teachers, classmates, and school property.
    • Follow class rules, routines, and procedures to create a positive and focused learning environment.
    • Be responsible for completing assignments on time, staying organized, and taking care of personal belongings.
  4. Independence:

    • Students will continue to build independence in managing their work, materials, and time.
    • They will take more responsibility for their learning by setting goals, tracking their progress, and asking for help when needed.
  5. Communication Skills:

    • Students will practice expressing their ideas clearly, both in writing and speaking.
    • They will work on listening attentively, participating in group discussions, and presenting their work confidently.

Third grade is a pivotal year of growth, where students develop the academic and social skills they need to succeed in the years ahead. We are excited to partner with parents in supporting each child’s success, and we look forward to seeing their progress throughout the year!
