Fourth Grade Expectations
Welcome to Fourth Grade! This is an exciting year where students build on their previous knowledge and take on more challenging academic tasks. In fourth grade, we focus on developing critical thinking skills, fostering independence, and continuing to strengthen our academic abilities. Here are the key expectations for our fourth-grade students:

Academic Skills:
- Reading: Students will work on reading longer, more complex texts, and will focus on comprehension, identifying key ideas, understanding character development, and analyzing story elements. They will also begin to explore different genres of literature.
- Writing: Students will focus on writing multi-paragraph essays, reports, and creative stories. They will develop strong organizational skills, improving their ability to structure writing, use varied sentence types, and apply correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Math: Students will build a deeper understanding of multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and basic geometry concepts. They will solve more complex word problems and practice applying mathematical concepts to real-world situations.
- Science & Social Studies: Students will explore topics such as ecosystems, matter, energy, the water cycle, and American history. They will engage in hands-on experiments and research projects to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Social-Emotional Development:
- Students will work on developing leadership skills, collaborating with others, and taking responsibility for their actions.
- They will continue to practice self-regulation, learning how to manage their emotions and handle challenges with a positive attitude.

Behavior Expectations:
- Respect classmates, teachers, and school property.
- Follow classroom routines and rules, contributing to a focused and respectful learning environment.
- Stay organized, complete assignments on time, and demonstrate responsibility for personal belongings.

Independence:
- Students will take on more responsibility for their learning, including setting academic goals and monitoring their progress.
- They will work on managing time effectively, organizing their materials, and completing tasks with minimal assistance.

Communication Skills:
- Students will practice expressing their ideas clearly in both written and verbal communication.
- They will participate in group discussions, presentations, and projects, practicing active listening and respectful speaking.
Fourth grade is a year of tremendous growth, where students develop stronger academic skills, independence, and social awareness. We are excited to partner with families to ensure every child is supported and challenged, and we look forward to a year of success and achievement!
