Understanding Lexile Levels

What does my child's Lexile score mean?  How do I find a book on his/her level?

Understanding Lexile Levels

At Pleasant Grove, we use Lexile Levels to help match students with books that are appropriate for their reading ability and comprehension. The Lexile system is a tool that measures both the difficulty of a text and a student's reading ability. Each student is assigned a Lexile score based on their performance on reading assessments, and books are also rated with Lexile measures to help guide book selections.

  • Lexile Measures: A Lexile measure is a number followed by the letter "L" (e.g., 500L, 800L), which represents the complexity of a text. The higher the number, the more challenging the text.

  • Matching Books to Readers: By matching a student’s Lexile score with books that fall within their range, we ensure that students are challenged but not overwhelmed by their reading material. This promotes reading growth and helps build confidence as they progress.

  • Reading Growth: As students read more and engage with increasingly complex texts, their Lexile scores will grow, reflecting their improved comprehension and vocabulary.

If you're unsure of your child's Lexile level or want guidance on choosing appropriate books, please reach out to our teachers or media center staff. We are here to help foster a love of reading and ensure every student finds books that match their interests and reading level.
